Celebrating its 80th anniversary

HAIDA GHaida G comes back to the pages of this magazine to celebrate its eightieth birthday. A vestige from the golden age of private mega yachts, the octogenarian Cox & Estevens design shines with its own light on the exclusive luxury charter circuits.

The eccentric American billionaire Max C. Fleischmann was the first of many owners who had his hands on the helm of Haida G. While half the world trembled at the crack of 29, Fleischmann was leaving Germany with his gleaming and beautiful 70 meters long yacht, built by Krupp on plans by Cox & Estevens with the aim of crossing the Atlantic via the Panama Canal and to moor his new born at the Santa Barbara Yacht Club in California. Its crossings and parties filled the yacht with an aura of glamour and adventure that has gone with it throughout the years and that most of her owners have promoted with great pleasure. The list of famous people from the cinema world, finance and fashion who have walked the decks of Haida with a glass of champagne on their hand has not stopped since the thirties until today. A wonderful wake that has never got muddy, not even during the years where it was used by the Navy as a warship.
Haida, originally without the G, was built especially strong to face both scientific and fishing expeditions or pleasure cruises. The vessel was equipped with two reversible Krupp engines, with independent cylinders, that nowadays still propel the vessel. The capacity of its fuel tanks, of 150 tons, allows to cover a distance of about 8.000 nautical miles without refuelling. That is, to sail from San Francisco to Singapore non-stop.

Comfortable and luminous

HAIDA GThe current owner of Haida has been extremely careful when renewing and refitting the boat. His aim was to give back to the yacht its original image which it had been losing over the years. We must keep in mind that the ship has gone through several owners, including an Egyptian, a Greek and a Japanese, and has changed its name twice: Sarina and Rosenvakalier. It is therefore significant that has been (almost) renamed with the same name: Haida G. And it is also the fact that the new owner decided to recover the two masts and the bowsprit, both purely decorative elements.
The update has also obviously meant updating the navigation and the safety systems. But as Carles Serra mentioned in his article on Haida G published in issue number 29 of this magazine, the owner also wanted to modernise the interiors to make them more comfortable and more in tune with nowadays uses. This included enhancing the outdoor areas, and to interconnect them to have a better free flow with the interior ones.
The interior is distributed in seven cabins, covered with shinny white wood, which can comfortably accommodate twelve guests: two VIP staterooms, two doubles and two with twin beds. All have nice views, huge beds, enormous bathrooms, generous closets, and wifi connection. On the upper deck there is the owner’s cabin, that has a large private saloon plus a studio area with computer and internet connection, direct access to the deck and double bathroom. The common areas are divided between the dining room, the lounge and the library.
Leisure time has the fun secured. The cabins and the saloons have satellite television, audio and video systems, plus outdoor cinema. Not to mention the toys and the water equipment: Zodiac Hurricane, a Novurania, two Yamaha FX 2006, two kayaks, a banana, several donuts, water skiing equipment and appropriate clothing for it, underwater fishing equipment, twelve snorkelling sets, six diving equipment and a compressor.

2010 Season

HAIDA G FlybridgeThe crew, which may be of up to a maximum of 16 crew members, have ten cabins, two rooms with large tables and large spaces dedicated as storage, cool store and laundry. Captain Julian Legg and his excellent team, where the Australian chef Ross Bauer stands out, are ready to begin a new crossing.
Haida G goes to where the client is to design a tailor made crossing. The charter rate for the 2010 season is of 175.000 / 189.000 euros per week (MYBA). Whether you want to anchor in the exclusive Caribbean island of Bequia and Mustique or to cruise the Mediterranean to enjoy exclusive beaches such as the Marina Piccola in Capri, do it onboard Haida G is a unique experience that exceeds any charter expectations. To sail on Haida G is a fascinating journey into the heart of the twentieth century naval history. <<
