1. Introduction
On the past 26th, 27th and 28th of June Puerto Portals, in Mallorca, hosted the annual appointment that the Italian make Riva organises for its owners.
This was this year’s second appointment, after the one that was held in Miami last February, but the interest lied in the fact that it was the first time that an event of these characteristics was celebrated in Spanish waters.
The meeting had the collaboration of other prestigious companies, such as Credit Suisse, champagne Veuve Clicquot and the winery Vini Pasqua, these two brands served their appreciated wines every time it was required throughout the event.
The Raduni Riva 2008, also known as Riva Trophy, consists in pleasant and amusing days where navigation, relax and the meeting of the make with its owners, in exclusive locations are combined. On this occasion the chosen locations were Puer to Portals and the Hotel St. Regis Mardavall, where the skippers briefing was held and where the par ticipants were staying. Around fifteen boats took part in this meeting, the larger one being a Riva Opera 85, a cruiser with fly bridge that was produced during the 2004 and 2005 seasons, nowadays replaced by the model Riva Opera 85 Super, and the smallest ones two Riva Olympic in wood, a model that had been produced between 1969 and 1983, as well as two Riva Aquarama, a Superaquarama, a Tropicana 43 or a Aquariva Limited Edition, a model of which only ten units were produced in 2006. In this way the fleet gathered classic models along with other ones, manufactured using the most modern technology.
The event also allowed the presentation of the objects of the La Grande Dame by Riva collection designed by Riva in collaboration with Veuve Clicquot, consisting in a toilet bag and a bar cabinet, where there is space to four conventional champagne bottles or two large magnum, six Riedel glasses, board games and other luxurious facilities. The name La Grande Dame obeys to one of the most exclusive specialities of Veuve Clicquot and the price of the cabinet is around 80.000 dollars.
For the awarding of the prizes three competitions were organised. The first one consisted in a regularity regatta in the bay of Palma; afterwards, the fleet headed to the Illetas beach, where lunch was ser ved at the Illetas seaside resor t, after which the par ticipating crews challenged themselves in a painting contest where the members of the press acted as the jury. Journalits also participated in a photographic contest with compact cameras cour tesy of the organisation, a contest won by our collaborator Miquel Mallafré. The day finished with a dinner in Tristán, the two stars Michelin Guide restaurant, located in Puerto Portals.
The third competition consisted in an elegance contest called La Grande Dame by Riva, where the boats and their crew had to sail using clothing inspired by the colours of Veuve Cliquot, orange and black, and acting as jury were the managers of the sponsoring companies and Riva designers, Mauro Micheli and Sergio Beretta, as well as managing director of the make, Ferruccio Rossi. The prize giving took place after a gala dinner served on the terrace of the contemporary art museum Es Baluard, with panoramic views on the bay of Palma. The winner of the trophy on this occasion was the Briton Neil Gillon, on Goose Chase, a classic Aquarama, after ending up in second place in the regularity regatta and in the painting contest.
