20th Monaco Yacht Show

Global showcase par excellence
The magnificent summer party held on 23rd June in the Hotel Monte Carlo Bay gardens provided the stage for the presentation of the twentieth Monaco Yacht Show to an audience of leading superyacht industry players and Monegasque business leaders.
This year’s show, from 22nd to 25th September, once again promises to be the international business hub for the superyacht industry and the luxury goods sector. Figures clearly reveal the sheer magnitude of this event. Port Hercule will welcome 500 of the world’s top-tier superyacht companies from 36 countries, with 88% of them being repeat exhibitors. This goes to prove the importance of MYS for the industry and how the show has managed to create a tight professional network with strong brand loyalty. A 100-strong fleet of spectacular superyachts between 25 and 90 metres will moor at the show, which gives an idea of the event’s lure for major shipyards, who attend year after year and reserve moorings months in advance. Space is limited, thus the eagerness shown by such early booking, but organisers also lay down strict quality standards and above all prioritise seriousness and vigour. And one final figure: over 27,000 visitors, professionals and members of the public, are set to attend this year’s show, 80% of whom will travel to Monaco from all four corners of the world.
Monaco Yacht Show’s outstanding networking opportunities are a mainstay of the event’s success: cocktail receptions, private parties, social gatherings, working breakfasts and press conferences organised by exhibitors on board yachts or at luxury hotels all provide the perfect chance for visitors to establish contacts with companies and for companies to reach out to potential clients and the international media.
During the four work-intensive days of MYS, at least 50 of these events will be staged. Speaking at the show’s launch party, Gaëlle Tallarida, recently-appointed MYS managing director after Luc Pettavino stepped down in May, highlighted Monaco Yacht Show’s commitment to excellence in each and every event and initiative. “Year after year”, she explained, “the Monaco Yacht Show improves the quality of its infrastructures and services with a view to attracting the superyacht industry’s leading players and the world elite of private and professional clients. We are here to follow through an international-level project, to meet the industry’s expectations and for MYS to remain at the forefront of superyacht shows”. “Global economic woes have accentuated the superyacht industry’s limitations and its dependence on existing clientele. Shipyards, brokers and charter companies are actively using social networks to publicise the fact that their yachts will be on show in Monaco in order to seduce potential clients with high purchasing power from around the world. Attracting these new clients is fundamental in consolidating a buoyant long-term market for the entire industry, including equipment and service providers”, stressed Johan Pizzardini, media coordinator of the event.
Innovative proposals will abound at Port Hercule in September, clear proof of the show’s commitment to attract new clients. Of the 100 yachts which will be exhibited at MYS 2010, thirty or so have been delivered this year, 24 were launched in 2009 and more than 60% measure over forty metres LOA.
Simply the fact that over half the yachts on show are less than one year old makes the Monaco Yacht Show a unique marketplace, oceans apart from other shows across the world geared more towards brokerage or second-hand boats. At Monaco, all exhibited yachts can be purchased directly from the shipyards and/or chartered from their brokers, giving both parties a wealth of advantages provided by this extraordinary opportunity. It comes as no surprise, then, that all 100 moorings have already been reserved and that the organisers have a long waiting list in the unlikely event of no-shows. The same can be said for the 9,000m_-plus quayside exhibition area which showcases industry services and equipment.
The consistently reaffirmed commitment to excellence and an ongoing revitalisation process form the leitmotiv for the show's organisers, who in addition are firmly committed to the social responsibility policy they have been developing for many years now.
This policy pursues the strong commitment to protecting the environment by contributing, since 2005, to the Carbon Neutral initiative through the payment of an ecotax that finances certified international environmental projects. A further significant measure and feature of this eco-responsible approach is that all the show's PR documents are printed on 100% recycled paper, fair trade cotton is used for textile publicity products, and all materials used – from inks to packaging – are fully recyclable.
The policy is additionally symbolised by two actions in aid of the Association Monégasque contre les Myopathies (AMM), which since 2001 has been funding research into the children's disease Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
What’s more, the 2010 Monaco Yacht Show will lend its support to the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation in a worldwide campaign to raise awareness in the superyacht industry about deforestation. This new collaboration underlines the principality’s desire to launch international projects to protect the rainforests. As a result, the show will closely monitor the projects it finances and will endeavour, as always, to offset its carbon footprint. The twentieth Monaco Yacht Show will take place between 22nd and 25th September in the Principality of Monaco. For further information www.monacoyachtshow.com
