Form and function

SkyEngineers from Dutch shipyard Heesen and designers from the Frank Laupman and Mojo Stumer architect studios joined forces to create a unique masterpiece, based around optimum-level design and cutting-edge technology. The end result is called Sky.

Heesen Yachts and Mojo Stumer embarked on a relationship four years prior to the launch of Sky, when one of the New York-based design studio’s closest clients wanted to build a yacht that would be at the forefront of design and exclusivity. With the design team singled out, all that remained was to select a shipyard, and the Dutch yard Heesen was the chosen one. The brief was to produce a 50-metre superyacht, the largest Heesen ever until the 55-metre Quinta Essentia was delivered the same year. Sky boasts an all-steel displacement hull with bulbous bow and an aluminium superstructure, with exterior design by Omega Architects, a studio that frequently works with Heesen, whilst interior design comes from the Mojo Stumer studio, led by architects Thomas J. Mojo and Mark D. Stumer. It was Stumer himself who was most directly involved with this project, laying down conditions where functionality would not be sacrificed because of form and taking on each question, each space and each detail with huge enthusiasm and professionalism, given the challenge that the unprecedented commission meant for the design group. The outcome was a groundbreaking design for a yacht, where steel, deep-tone ebony and limestone prevail, cleverly combined with glass, LED lighting and carbon fibre to give the sought-after masculine appearance.
