Ferretti 780: Rational and pragmatic
Written by Miquel Mallafré Translation Marco Benevento
The Ferretti 780 is born to complete the upper segment of the Italian make, with a very rational distribution, great standard equipment and the discreet introduction of some very interesting aesthetic elements. The whole being intelligent and pragmatic simultaneously.
The first unit of the Ferretti 780 was presented on the occasion of the past Cannes boat show and was already sold to a Spanish owner. A simple information that is useful to explain that the Italian make has many suppor ters on this side of the Pyrenees. With this model, born as an evolution of the 761, Ferretti renews the upper segment of its range, made up by yachts with fly bridge from 46 to 88 feet, because the 780 becomes the third largest one in their catalogue.
From the aesthetic point of view the yacht is a clear member of the Ferretti family, for the powerful shape of the hull, the design of the superstructure with just two large lateral windows, the smooth shape of the roll-bar and, mainly, the large square windows of the hull, equipped with opening port holes on both sides. But in this case the design studio headed by Giovanni Zuccon has added a new window shape on the bow, destined to illuminate and to ventilate the VIP cabin. The shape raises a greater horizontal dimension, but it incorporates a circular port hole inside, that can be opened, so that both functions are combined in a good way.
But perhaps the most considerable aesthetic renovation is the use of teak in the interiors, replacing the cherry tree wood that the shipyard had been using usually in the units of this type for the last seasons.
Uninterrupted views
On the main deck the interior has been solved with very few lines, obtaining a space of great amplitude as the saloon is combined with the dining room, separated just by a small altitude difference, but no furniture between them. Even the inner stairs to access the fly bridge have been integrated on the starboard side to avoid interrupting the views from bow to stern or vice versa. The existing space underneath the stairs has been advantageously used for the bar cabinet. In this way the saloon becomes a large living and conversation space, with magnificent views astern and to the sides, thanks to the large lateral windows, views that are also enjoyed by the dining room, located only a few centimeters higher, equipped with a table for eight companions at table and a piece of furniture for the crockery for twelve that, by the way, comes as standard.
A bulkhead separates this atmosphere from the rest of the boat. A sliding door on port leads directly to the galley and, from it, through another sliding door to the steering position; a pantograph door allows to exit to the lateral walkway, so that the crew can get to the galley without going through the saloon. Another sliding door on starboard, destined for the guests, leads to the steering position or to the stairs that descends towards the night area.
The galley is equipped with a 276 liters fridge plus a freezer (74 liters), conventional and microwaves oven, a four burners vitroceramic cook top, dishwasher for eight services and a granite work surface with two sinks, but the incorporation of an upper hatch that contributes to the illumination and natural ventilation retained specially our attention, something very useful in a space like this. Seen from the outside it is located in the center of the ceiling, between the main windscreen and the upper steering position. The communication between the inside and the cockpit is the usual one used by Ferretti, by means of glass and steel sliding doors, in addition to a window that opens against the ceiling of the cockpit, so that the intensity of the opening between the interior and the outside can be graduated in a splendid way.
Bathroom with views
The Ferretti 780 has four double cabins and four bathrooms. The owner’s cabin is located amidships and at full beam, but separated from the engine room by the area destined for the crew and the tanks. In addition, the area destined to the bedroom is separated from the bathroom by two translucent sliding doors. The washbasin is the main piece of this set, as it is very large; it has two independent mixing-valve taps, and is oriented directly to the starboard lateral window. This window can be closed with the two inner sliding shutters that contain the mirror, so that when getting washed or at night they are closed, but during the day they can open providing light from this side. The shower is separated by a tempered glass screen, decorated with wood on the floor and mosaic on the bulkheads; another separated cabinet houses the toilet and the bidet. The cabin itself is equipped with a large double bed oriented towards the bow, as well as a chaise longue on the port side, stuck to the lateral window, which turns it into an excellent relaxation space by the sea; slightly more astern there is an area destined as studio or dressing table and, just behind the bed head a large wardrobe and the studio itself has been anticipated. The VIP cabin is forward, also equipped with a double bed, closets on the sides and direct access to a private bathroom also equipped with sink, toilet, bidet and separated shower. The two guest’s cabins equip as standard two individual beds, but the shipyard has foreseen different options for the port cabin that optionally can also equip a pullman bunk, or replace the whole by a double bed; the port bathroom also acts as a courtesy toilet, because it is accessible from the cabin and from the vestibule.
