Pershing 72: Permanent renovation
Written by Miquel Mallafré Translation Marco Benevento
With the presentation of the new Pershing 72 this famous Italian make sets a trend once again. New design, new spaces, greater versatility and the collaboration with other companies of great prestige place this yacht on the front row for the models of the future.
The motto of the Italian make Pershing is Yachting into the future. A motto that is fully justified, looking at the yachts that they manufacture, but it is also a motto that there have defend every day with every new model. The Pershing 72 is a good example of it and it allows confirming that the shipyard does not doubt in under taking as many alliances as necessary to reach the main goal, that is to position its products on the highest segment of the international scene.
The basic aspects that have positioned Pershing in a leadership position have not changed. It is the design of the interior and of the superstructure by the architect Fulvio de Simoni, it is the metallic colour of the hull and the superstructure, or the sport water lines created by the engineering division of the Ferretti Gruop, led by the engineer Andrea Frabetti. We will recall, also, the use of the vacuum infusion system for the manufacturing or the usual use of transmissions with direct shafts and surface propellers, as a demonstration of the interest that the make places in the most modern technologies, both for the manufacturing and for the propulsion.
A different type of open
With the Pershing 72 the shipyard opens up a new line regarding the design and the habitability. The 72 still is unmistakably a Pershing, but the renovation is clearly shown with a sharper profile thanks to the use of a superstructure with a single lateral window, instead of the two smaller windows that the make has used on the previous models. As well, the strong points of its habitability is the new sliding poop deck, that allows to increase or to reduce the solar protection over the aft deck, with a unique system on a yacht of this style so far. In addition to the door and the stained-glass window that separate the interior from the outside, that are retractable, so that all this deck can be enjoyed separately or jointly, as it happened on the first open models equipped with a hard top. But one of the aspects in which the make has made more emphasis has been the collaboration with the company Poltrona Frau for the execution of the steering position, all the seats and several details of the interior design, using leather. Poltrona Frau is one of the Italian leading design companies. Created in 1912, its main activity was developed in the design of chairs and sofas, but nowadays their activity is not limited the field of the design of interior furniture, but it reaches different aspects such as the collaborations with the most famous international architects - Foster, Nouvel, Calatrava... - or the production of seats and panels for the most prestigious car makes, such as Ferrari or Rolls Royce, and even cabins for airplanes. But this is the first time that they collaborate in the design for the interiors of a yacht. In this way, once again, it shows the interest that the whole Ferretti Group has in exhibiting the Made in Italy mark as broadly as possible.
Interior spaces
The possibilities of remaining outdoors are numerous on board of the Pershing 72. Beginning by the stern, the bathing platform is enormous. It is necessary to be so, in order to protect the transmissions, but the space with no doubt is advantageously used, with a large stowing locker with water drainage on starboard and the automatic bathing stairs on port. Individual lateral stairs surround the central solarium astern, underneath which there is the garage that takes in a semi rigid tender on starboard and a BRP 3D water bike on port; the garage can be searched from each side of the cockpit raising a part of the solarium with no need to raise the whole, but when it is raised it is made with the central part of the bathing platform, in order to avoid to rub the teak during the launching operations and, in addition, the floor of the garage can be inclined downwards to ease the launching and the hoisting.
Already on deck, the manoeuvre is hidden inside, in the quarters, with large cleats and windlasses with feet operated buttons. The furniture includes a sofa by the head of the solarium and another L shaped one on starboard, surrounding a large table of adjustable height, that can also be transformed into a solarium; its wings can be folded to be able to welcome a different number of occupants, but even when it is folded there is a good surface available where they have taken the precaution to make a protection to limit the movements of the objects placed here. This area has a service piece of furniture on port, equipped with closet, waste basket, grill and sink; this furniture disguises the access to the crew cabin, located underneath, equipped with two bunks, bathroom and a small space destined for the mess with a sink, microwaves and a vitroceramic cooking surface with a single burner. The engine room is accessed from there.
The possibilities of using this space as a relaxation area are maximum, thanks to its versatility. The poop deck can slide towards the bow, to let the outer living area open, or towards the stern, and in that case it can protect almost the whole cockpit. In addition, the bulkhead that separates the interior from the outside goes down in its totality until disappearing. Therefore, firstly it is necessary to open the door on port, sliding it towards starboard and, then an electrical device makes the whole glass bulkhead go down to the height of the backrest of the two sofas - inner and outer, located back against back -, obtaining a total opening. This allows to the guests to share at will the whole space of this deck, from the galley to the cockpit.
