Cyrus 33 Angel of Joy: A romantic version of the modern
Written by Carlos Serra, Mallol Traductors Associats S.l.
Its top speed and exclusive design, with an old-fashioned touch combined with cutting-edge modern applications, foresee an outstanding reception for the new range of Motor-yachts from Vitters Shipyard.
When a ship builder with the expertise of Vitters, which is renowned for its magnificent and technically flawless units, initiates a pilot project to build ships in Turkey, a developing country where the naval industry has an excellent reputation as well as controlled costs, they are sure of their course and what they wish to offer. The first results of this daring venture were presented in the Cannes and Monaco Boat Shows and confirmed the highest expectations, since they offer a highly personalised, we can even say unforgettable, product; evidently due to its construction, technique, and finishes which have achieved the maximum level of perfection that can be ordered from Vitters. The first model of the range designed by René van der Velden with naval architecture by Pieter Van Oossanen, the Cyrus 33 is built of epoxy resin and fibreglass with a foam core on moulds specifically created by the Antalya shipyard. This construction system as well as the system specifications and accommodation, personally decorated by Van der Velden, which will surely vary due to the influence of future ship owners on the units which follow, fulfils the dual programme which Cyrus Yachts and their partners have planned with the creation of this new ship builder: to reduce the period from the signing of the order to its delivery to just 12 months, which will attract young clients who are in a hurry to buy a ship, and it provides them with refurbishment options which allow them to select the interior decoration in their own unit to satisfy their individual tastes. Both its exterior silhouette as well as its interior decoration proposal by Van der Velden have been key factors in the creation of this attractive product, which stands above the general trend with its subtle nostalgic details and sensuous curves, where the user will discover every imaginable convenience in this yacht built by one of the greatest shipbuilders of the 21st Century.
Excellent use of space
The compact length of the Angel of Joy does not detriment the layout of its indoor and outdoor spaces; this is due to the supplementary volume which the designer has discovered by adopting a semi-elevated steering station over the ver tical windows of the first deck, an aesthetic feature reminiscent of the Sixties. The same romantic master touches have been used in the fan of the bow risings, which open into an elegant curve which is also designed to increase the capacity of this hull zone, while to the stern, this aesthetic is highlighted in a pumped transom and several wood wall fittings on the bulwarks, which are highly effective in reducing the visual impact.
Its underwater hull section and naval architecture have been designed by the prestigious Van Oossanen firm and combines its stream-lined economy needs with the desired speed for this unit. A semi-glide option with rounded bilges and prolonged keel has been selected for this purpose.
Although it requires the use of stabilisers to assure a smooth voyage during perpendicular swells, they provide a ver y harmonious movement in rough seas and maintain the speed even in these conditions.
Consequently, the underwater hull and superstructure form an aesthetic whole, which is also practical, which has achieved maximum volume in its interior. The engine room provides access to the adjacent garage and also opens into the transom, while the crew member zone located just below creates an insulated space between the engine rooms and the ship owner’s cabin, which is located below deck in the centre of the hull. In order to facilitate circulation, this layout eliminates numerous useless stairs and hallways, which, in turn enhances the efficiency of the five crew members which the Cyrus 33 programme has planned for the yacht’s daily tasks. The usage of the main deck is also exceptional since it includes the volume of the steering station, which is raised just a half-level above it, in the vacant spaces left by the kitchen and connecting stairways in order not to detriment the quality of the living quarters.
Three outdoor zones
The ornately original aesthetic exterior is, paradoxically, the result of efficient planning of the outdoor living spaces, which provide the maximum surface and utility that is expected for a unit of this length. Note the quarterdeck of the stern, which practically hangs over the transom and is protected by a prolonged cantilever until the end of the length, which is equipped with a spectacular oval table and matching benches which includes various chairs with removable armrests. The presence of the lateral steps, facing the stern platform and gangway as well as the ladder which ascends to the flybridge or the semi-circular glass door of the salon diminish the spaciousness of this relaxation zone. It has an easy connection to the upper space by means of this ladder, while the passage to the wide and sheltered hallways is perfectly flat without a sense of narrowness. These corridors extend to the ship’s bow where the anchoring zone is located, framed in elegant handrails with wood finish, as well as an intimate corner comprised by a bench with table and a solarium.
The most spacious and versatile outdoor area is located in the flybridge, which can be accessed from the stern quar terdeck and the indoor steering station, and extends towards the stern thanks to the cantilever which provides shade to the lower deck. According to the shipbuilder, there are many different configurations which can used to adapt this large sundeck according to each ship owner’s desires. Another major priority in Angel of Joy has been to provide stowage of a large raft, which exceeds the conventional garage capacity, which is stored near the crane used for its launch.
The crane and the base of the Jacuzzi create a natural enclosure which is separate from the raft of the flybridge space, and the Jacuzzi is also equipped with a large oval table, with a fully equipped bar complete with grill, solarium, and outdoor steering station. As explained above, it is very near to the bridge and makes it possible to combine both stations, where the outdoor station is ideal for port manoeuvres and short trips near to the coast. A solid antenna arch shelters two folding canopies with an excellent structure, and when opened, they provide all the shade required for the front and rear section of this elevated terrace.
