The Rodman 64 is the latest model of the Yachts range that this Galician shipyard builds, but it is also the largest one built to date. However, the sales success reached has been one of the reasons that have encouraged the company to undertake more ambitious ventures. In this sense the Rodman 64 could be the first link of a new stage.
The Rodman 64 has confirmed the interest that the Spanish yachts raise in the worldwide arena for large pleasure boats. Presented at the end of 2004, its good acceptance in the market has brought the Galician company to study very seriously a project to approach more ambitious ventures in the field of leisure yachting. The result has been the agreement with the prestigious Italian designer Fulvio de Simoni for the design of a new range of yachts with models of up to 110 feet in length. Neither the size of these yachts nor the technical complexity of their construction are considered to be a problem for the make, because Rodman has a wide experience in naval construction, with different types of vessels destined to the merchant navy, fishing or official bodies of different countr ies in sever al continents. At the time being the make has two ranges of pleasure boats, one destined to the spor t fishing, under the R denomination, and other one denominated Yachts, of which this model is the largest one of a range that begins at 38'.
THE BEST EXPERIENCES
This constructive experience is already made clear in this model equipped with a hull with a deep V shape on the bow and tunnels for the propeller shafts astern, allowing to combine good speed performances, navigation capacity with bad weather and a great comfor t, both dynamic and at rest.
The constructive quality is one of the strong points of the make. Rodman is one of the few Spanish shipyards that has its own physics and chemistry research and development laboratories and that makes tank tests of their scale models. As from this season the company applies the so-called RQS (Rodman Quality System), consisting in a set of criteria and quality procedures applied to the design, the production, the deliver y and the guarantee of their boats.
Rodman has been the first European shipyard that has obtained the ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 quality and environment certifications, and has also been the first worldwide builder in implementing the Volvo IPS technology, that is already present in several of its models. The structural solidity of the boats deserves special attention on behalf of the make, with factors as its full load weight, superior to the one of similar boats, the high ratio between the weight of the polyester structure reinforced with fibre glass and the weight of the yacht at full load, as well as the structural characteristics of the hull bottom, in a combination of longitudinal and cross-sectional elements, of monolithic laminates, transverse bulkheads and floor frames. All of it allows to the shipyard to offer a guarantee of up to 10 years on the hull against structural damages and of five years against osmosis.
INHABITABLE AND FUNCTIONAL
The Rodman 64 is the best example of the combination between habitability, functionality and visibility that the shipyard looks for in all its models. In this case it presents interiors distributed in three double cabins and three bathrooms, in addition to a crew cabin astern of the engine room. The main deck lodges the common areas of the yacht, with the steering position, the dining room, the galley and the living areas. And it is here where the Rodman 64 raises particular solutions.
The first one is that the steering position is located in a central position, precisely on the centre line. A central adjustable chair welcomes the Captain and, in front of him, all the control elements of the boat have been placed, on a console in which the curved shapes predominate, to a point of becoming enveloping. The standard equipment includes autopilot,VHF, 72 miles radar, echo sounder, GPS, etc, with two colour 14" TFT screens on which the radar, the plotter, the sounder or the GPS can be visualized indifferently. The furniture that surrounds the steering position also evolves over cur ved shapes that transmit a very cosy sensation. On starboard there is a living area that consists in a large C shaped sofa, surrounding a low central table, thought for the appetizer, whereas another area on port has a similar but smaller sofa. This disposition allows that several guests can accompany the Captain during navigation and allows its use as a breakfasts area.
More towards the stern an area destined to the dining room and the galley has been located. These areas are separated by means of a ground level difference and by the shape of the furniture itself, specifically the bulkhead of the galley on port, and the stairs accessing to the fly bridge on starboard, but that does not prevent the total visual contact between the bow and the stern, so that the sensation of amplitude is never lost.
The dinning room also has a U shape sofa that surrounds a table with extending sides with a central supplement that is kept in the support of the table itself. This system allows assuring the solidity of the arrangement when it is decided to use the maximum surface of the table at the time of eating. The galley has a counter that separates it from the dining room, with drawers on the side corresponding to this last one, so that the necessity of putting away the tools that are more proper of the dining room is solved. By the way: crockery, glassware and cutler y are included in the price. The galley equipment includes a two bodies refrigerator (181 + 44 litres) located on port, in such a way that it conceals the shape of the outer stairs accessing to the fly bridge; in addition there is a Bosch vitroceramic cooking plate of four burners, double sink with wood covers that will serve as cutting surfaces, microwaves with grill and abundant stowage space.
QUALITY MATERIALS
The lower deck is distributed locating the owner’s cabin astern, at full beam, with a large central double bed whose head is astern and has an imaginative particularity: the small night tables are hidden underneath the bed itself. It has been made like this in order to make the most of the available space and to fit the whole on the bulkhead that separates the bed from the dressing room and the bathroom. In this cabin the natural illumination is provided by vertical portholes, two on each side, of which three are fixed and the fourth one can be opened for the necessary natural ventilation. From the port side of the bed the bathroom is accessed, equipped with a toilet, two washbasins and separated shower with massage column.
The decoration and the accessories are of good quality, because the taps are from Grohe, the floor in Corian and the Venetian blinds in satin wood, whereas the furniture is varnished. The equipment is completed with a dressing room on starboard, so that the occupants of this cabin will be able to store plenty of clothing. The second important cabin is in the bow, also equipped with a central bed double and access to a private bathroom equipped with washbasin, shower and toilet. The third cabin is on starboard, equipped with two individual beds and a closet taking advantage of the space that the stairs that communicate with the main deck leave, plus another one on the starboard side. This cabin does not have its own bathroom. Its occupants will have to use the one that has been arranged on the port side, also accessible by the guests during the day.All the interior decoration is made using noble woods and quality tapestries, in Alcantara or leather, but the shipyard is not only open to each owner selection of materials for the finishing, but also to a certain degree of personalization regarding the furniture.
UNCLUTTERED ATMOSPHERE
The outer atmospheres of the Rodman 64 are ample and allow an excellent degree of uses by the guests. Those who prefer the sun have a remarkable solarium on the foredeck, divided in two large long sunbathing cushions to ease its manipulation. The manoeuvre is made of a Lofrans windlass that stands out deck whereas the 12 millimetres chain that can be seen runs to the stem, under which the 50 kg anchor is stowed. To go to the cockpit or vice versa the boat has well conceived lateral walkways, with the fibre of the hull going over the floor level a few centimetres, which makes them drier and facilitates a better positioning of the stainless steel stanchions that, by the way, are vertical, but as they go forward they have a certain inclination towards the bow, which contributes to give a touch of dynamism to the profile of the yacht. For a better holding down, there are also inner handrails on the upper part of the superstructure. The cockpit is practically protected by the poop deck in its totality, so that it is a comfortable place to eat under the shade or to have open air suppers, and therefore the boat already has a sofa on the stern, which can be complemented with a table and folding chairs.
From the port quarter there is a descended to the enormous bathing platform and, from there, the cabin for two crew members located astern of the engine room is accessed. The stern manoeuvre has a metallic fairlead on each quarter, from where the mooring lines go to a 1.000 watts Lofrans winch and, from there to a cleat to make the ends firm. The remaining rope is left in a cupboard that has been arranged in the lower part of that same piece of furniture. Both the gangway as well the bathing stairs are electro hydraulic and automatic. But the strongpoint of the outer atmospheres is in fly bridge. Also here the steering position is placed on the centre line, although it is in front of a seat able to accommodate two people. The equipment of the console includes the usual repeaters, although the TFT screens measure 7" instead of 10,4". Just behind a service cabinet that lodges a grill, a refrigerator and a sink has been arranged. This allows to cater for the necessities of the guests who will occupy a large C shape sofa that surrounds a table with folding wings and adjustable in height, allowing its transformation into a solarium, but the real sun bathing area is forward on this same deck, next to the steering position, which allows to sunbathe while being with the skipper during navigation. Behind the sofa a Besenzoni crane allows to launch the tender that can be stowed on the poop deck.
SPEED AND RANGE
The Rodman 64 can be driven with two 1.000 Hp CAT C18 engines, that will much be of the taste of the American public, or with two 1.050 Hp MAN engines. The unit tested mounted the two 1.050 Hp MAN D 2840 LE 403 engines with 10 cylinders in V and a capacity of 18,27 litres. With this power we had the opportunity to verify the good qualities of the yacht as far as navigation and performance, reaching a maximum speed of 32,4 knots at 2.400 rpm.As each one of these engines has a consumption of 212 litres of diesel oil at their maximum revolutions, it is not difficult to estimate the minimum range of the boat in almost 10 hours or more than 300 miles, with the corresponding corrections as soon as the regime is lowered to around 2.000 rpm and 27 knots, the yacht will be able to sail more than 350 miles. This means an excellent combination between performance and range, which agrees perfectly with the image that the yacht transmits.
