1. Swan 100S Julie Marie2. More info 3. Specifications
A 30 meters on which there is nothing lacking, nothing is too much nor it can be asked for more regarding accommodation, cockpit and systems. Exceptional distribution, perfect aesthetic and a outstanding navigation for a technically excellent yacht and made in great detail by the most prestigious shipyard.
We had the fortune to coincide with Julie Marie in the Canary Islands, a few days before the start of the Maxi Rolex Transatlantic Race, and to attend one of the last previous sailing sessions previous to the regatta. Despite of being already fully loaded with most of the food supplies that were going to be used in the passage, as well as having its fuel and water tanks full , the eight knots of breeze blowing south of Gran Canaria were enough for this pure thoroughbred to demonstrate its identity. With a draft of four meters and a mast of almost 45 meters with a main furling in-boom and a 105% genoa, the whole designed by Frers excels in the mentioned conditions: it reaches a heeling angle that is enough to support the bilge, apparent wind is created and it sails away with the facility of a dinghy, something surprising for the more than 80 tons than it displaces fully loaded. Its rudder enjoys an extraordinary sensitivity and offers in addition precision, tact and response.
The manoeuvre is easy thanks to a well structured cockpit that gathers the winches and the ropes by the steering positions. Its helmsman benches, jutting out, face individual wheels of excellent diameter and have ample very well distributed control panels. The manoeuvre area gathers four hydraulic winches, while the main sail uses a captive. The cockpit itself is formed by two C shaped benches with good backrest, and with telescopic railings that help and hold up when the yacht heels. The whole deck is almost in a single level, and there is a comfortable way through at the height of the winches to go out to the walkways without having to go to the stern. The whole reunites all the characteristics of a fast and clean sailboat without giving away a single comfort element.
AMPLE DECK AND OF EASY CIRCULATION
Since the launching of the Swan 100, Nautor and German Frers have tested different deck configurations that range from the classic flush deck, divided in two cockpits, to several designs of raised deck houses. Julie Marie is the latest version described as Semi-Raised Saloon and, among all the Swan 100 we have seen until now, it seems the best achieved. We are going to try to explain why. The saloon located in the deck house has views and simultaneously enjoys enough surface. The engine room located underneath also acquires sufficient height so that an engineer could work in it kneeling or leaning. The cockpit benefits form the protection of the deck house and the coamings that follow it, with a capacity close to 14 people. As for the aesthetics, the curved shell that it draws up and its enveloping window panes, created by Frers, fit ideally with the deck that has almost no camber nor round.
The most personal element on Julie Marie is the composite bimini created specially for this unit, almost invisible despite of the evident protection that it provides. Instead of trying to hide the structure, its design plays with the finish of the white gel coat and uses curves similar to those of the deck house, providing that invisibility to it.
On deck there are also other elements that stand out that have already been seen on other Nautor models, such as the raised bulwark that welcomes numerous fittings and open chocks, the folding bollards and the half buried furlers. The wide transom opens up to unfold a garage able to take in a tender proportional to the size of the boat, also seen on previous units.
UNUSUAL DECORATION ON A SWAN
For this 100 feet Nautor version the division that places the main cabins astern of the saloon was chosen. This distribution has as an additional advantage the rising of a fourth cabin forward of the saloon and whose double function, because it can be used by the Captain or an additional couple of guest, adds versatility to the yacht.
Not less interesting is the decoration work that, to order of Julie Marie’s owner, was made by the designer Cristiana Serre in coordination with Nautor´s interiors department. Fleeing from the severity of the usual teak of the shipyard, Serre chose a cherry wood with a very visible grain and managed to convince Nautor to do it without the numerous laminated frames that its style is so acquainted with. The presence of straight pieces in borders and lintels, combined with enough radiuses to maintain the marine aspect, give to the whole a much more relaxed atmosphere. The combination of the pink wood with the dark floor and the cream colour of the tapestries, rich in textures, benefits that relaxed attitude and it transmits a friendly, Mediterranean and up-to-date life style
SALOON AND CABINS
An impressive staircase begins backwards on the starboard side of the saloon to descend, already on the body plan, to a lobby where the bathroom of the starboard cabin has a door and thus is used as courtesy bathroom. The central corridor, whose dark floor with laths contrast with the placid warmth of the wood, opens to two double cabins with parallel bunks to finally lead, to the owner’s stateroom. Without being an enormous space, it is never theless able to give to its occupant a sensation of considerable amplitude. It has been arranged with a double bed moved to the side leaving therefore space for a real sofa; that also frees ground surface that, combined with the mentioned sofa, the dressing table/writing-desk and the closets, gives it a suite category.
This stateroom is also, for its amplitude, the place where the decorative style of Cristiana Serre has been able to develop with most impetus. Once again the contrast of the warm wood with deep grain with the whites, in this case made of leather coatings and tapestries of wide texture on the sofa, while the floor is dark like on the rest of the boat but in a cosy leather that replaces the wengé wood strips. The owner´s taste is obvious with the election of the bed spreads of thick texture that combines with the immaculate white bed sheets. In the cabins the coordination also includes leather but there is a new element: the white tongue and groove joint with visible pore, that compensates with its informality the seriousness of the colours and transmits a marine atmosphere in abundance.
The saloon located in the deck house expands slightly under its perimeter and, without reaching the width that it would obtain if its backrests would reach the hull, however it overcomes the narrow sensation that many saloons limited by the windows create. The disposition of its large port sofa, dedicated to two tables that can be united or stay separated and combined with several armchairs, becomes a magnificent solution to allow either a large eating table or two different corners for conversations or for playing games. It is complemented on the starboard side with a sofa facing a small table and a navigation area and an office located on the starboard corner.
Sliding blinds for the shelves that hide books and screens have been anticipated, so that that corner is integrated in the decoration when the yacht does not operate. There is also the engine controls and a steering joystick, to take advantage of the visibility offered by the large windows to keep an eye when on the watch from the inside. Forward of the saloon there is access to the mentioned cabin that can be used either for the Captain as for a third guest couple. The galley forms a generous corridor with work top on each side and has, in addition, a lobby where there is place for the electrical switchboard and the entrance to the engine room. A crew cabin with a staircase and direct access to the deck finally leads to the both crew cabins, each one equipped with the corresponding bathroom.
CONSTRUCTION
Nautor has demonstrated that its massive lamination technique, reinforced with aramides and carbon adapts perfectly to units of this size or even larger. On the hull bottom and the sides there is an extensive reinforcements mesh, combined with a series of composite main bulkheads, with honeycomb core.
The selection of those techniques shows clearly a search for rigidity and lightness that does not put at risk, on the other hand, the solidity or the durability of the boat. The rudder is made in carbon, just as the shrouds integrated on the bulwarks of the hull. That the Swan 100 first of all tries to be effective and independent, and that the Finnish shipyard does not take risks, is shown by numerous technical depar tments that we would like to mention here: the hydraulics, with a ring circuit and power intakes both on the main engine as well as on both generators; all together that is five power sources - with the two power stations fed by batteries - for an installation that moves 23 functions. As for the electricity, the move of the chargers and the inverters to an exclusive space is a good idea, as it also is the use of an adapter for external current that accepts from 180 V to 250 V and several oscillation frequencies. The presence of large current inverters even allows to operate the electrical burners of the galley without starting the generators, that are only required for the air conditioned.
The electronic control system deserves special attention, as it centralises the surveillance and the alarms of all the systems; the forced ventilation throughout the interior, that is combined with the air conditioned circuit; the electrically operated hatches by means of remote control or the perfect pivoting arm system for the anchor, added to a transom door, a system for launching the tender and an electro-hydraulic gangway. Nautor’s years of experience are also noticeable in the simple but well solved structure of the bimini, the steering binnacles and their consoles of variable inclination, or the perfect flush fitting of the numerous hatches that populate the impeccable teak deck. In the engine room, the excellence of the sound proofing is specially noticeable in the saloon, located above it. The exhausts of the three diesel pieces of equipment have Halyard water separators that reduce even more the noise. The fuel systems has a double circuit to be able to clean the filters during the operation. There are dirty and clean oil tanks and watertight trays under each installation. As final praise it might be necessary to talk about to the accommodation and its cabinetry work. Although Nautor is well known for their excellence in that department, it is a good news to see how on Julie Marie its craftsmen have been able to adapt the same level of requirement to an already described, completely new style for them. We are in the presence of an impeccable work, with magnificent sound proofing and finishes, that of necessity must have satisfied the owner and matches with the remark made by Enrico Chieffi, Nautor commercial manager: the Swan of this size are standard boats in their construction and their systems, but as for the accommodation and the cockpit layout they can be as customised as their owner desire.
